๐ Exploring Malana – India’s Hidden Himalayan Village of Mystery
By Buddolla Karthikeya Goud
Tucked deep within the Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh lies a mysterious little village that feels like it belongs to another world — Malana. Known for its ancient customs, distinct culture, and breathtaking scenery, Malana is a place that stays with you long after you’ve left.
๐บ️ The Journey to Malana
The trek to Malana begins from Jari or Malana Gate, a few kilometers from Kasol. From there, it’s a steep 4 km hike through pine forests, narrow trails, and rocky patches. The climb can be tiring, but the surrounding beauty keeps you going.
As we climbed higher, we could hear the gushing of the Malana River far below and the mountain breeze that carried the scent of deodar trees. After about 1.5 to 2 hours of trekking, the first glimpse of Malana village — perched like a forgotten kingdom on a ridge — left us speechless.
๐ง๐ค๐ง A Unique Culture
Malana is unlike any other place in India. The villagers speak their own language called Kanashi, and they consider themselves descendants of Alexander the Great. Their customs are ancient, and they believe their way of life must not be influenced by outsiders.
One important rule: tourists are not allowed to touch the locals or their property. Even shops ask visitors to point at the item they want, and the shopkeeper places it in a basket. It may seem strange at first, but it’s a fascinating example of how Malana has preserved its isolation and purity over centuries.
๐ฟ Nature & Tranquility
Malana is surrounded by the mighty Chandrakhani and Deo Tibba peaks, and the air feels cleaner and cooler up there. The valley below is filled with terraced farms, and at night, the sky turns into a magical dome of stars. There’s no need for filters here — nature is in HD.
We spent time sitting near the Malana stream, watching it flow over rocks with the sound of absolute peace. It’s a place where your phone signal disappears but your soul connects.
๐ฅ The Controversial Side
Malana is also famous — or infamous — for a certain product: Malana Cream, a high-quality hashish that has made the village known among backpackers worldwide. However, it’s important to respect the law — buying or using any such substance is illegal and can land you in serious trouble.
Visit Malana for its culture, not controversy.
๐ Things to Keep in Mind
- Do not touch people or property – Respect local customs.
- Carry water and light snacks – No big shops on the way.
- Dress modestly – It’s a conservative village.
- Don’t expect luxuries – Go for the experience, not comfort.
